Source Wood Floors FAQ: Fitting wood flooring

Subcategories:

I have a question about Bona gap master, Bona gap master filler 310ml product.

Hi There,I'm looking at a way to seal and finish the ancient, gappy, uneven and split in places elm [I think] floorboards. They will be the kitchen floor in my flat. The flat is above a shop and any kitchen spillage could be a disaster, so a good seal is required. I've thought of caulk rope between the gaps and then maybe sikaflex or similar but am worried about movement even if I scarf in places, screw and plug.

Any advice and recommendations re techniques and your products would be most welcome. I don't really want to have to take up the boards as I will lose most of them in the process and won't be able to replace 18" old elm.I need to get on the case tomorrow.

Regards and thanks G.B

The problem as you state is the movement in the floor. Ideally you would take up all the floor and put a thin ply base down first. You could use fillets instead of your rope idea. Just cut thin slivers of timber such as pine and use PVA wood glue and then hammer them into the gaps and sit the Bona Gapmaster product on top and then sand it down for a smooth finish.

We are planning to fit wood flooring in our new extension. At what stage of the project should we install the wooden flooring

If at all possible the wood flooring should be considered like carpet and it should be one of the last stages of the project. Hence do the painting and of course ensure that all wet trades are completed and fully dried out and ensure concrete screeds are dired to zero or at one to two percent moisture. If the wooden flooring is structural and forms part of the sub floor and has to go down earlier in the process then use protective covering to minimise any damage. Add architrave, skirting board or perimeter trims as the last stage.
