Source Wood Floors FAQ: Floating wood floors

Subcategories:

I would like to have solid oak flooring T&G fit in my lounge and onto a concrete base. Could you please advise the type of wood flooring underlay to use?

Solid wood flooring is not generally recommended to be "floated" onto an flooring underlay. It really should be "bonded" to the subfloor. Engineered wood floors are much more dimensionally stable so they won't expand and contract as much with changes in atmospheric conditions. However solid wood floors are more prone to movement and each floor board can expand at different rates so we would recommend a full stick down with Sikabond T54 or Sika T52 in conjunction with Acoubond underlay which has slots cut into it so that the wood floor is still "bonded" to the subfloor. The other alternative is to use an XPro tack underlay which has a sticky adhesive coating on the top beneath a protective peel off sheet. However there is a knack to using these and best left to the experienced wood floor fitter.
