Hardwood testing

Different wood species exhibit different levels of hardness - soft woods such as pine have very low ratings when compared to hardwood species such as oak and walnut.

There are times when the hardness of a wood floor is a key factor - for example if the floor is to be installed in a:
- sports or dance hall
- commercial premises, pub cafe or restaurant etc
- main thoroughfare such as a hallway
- or a busy kitchen area

Measuring the hardness of a wood species can be carried out scientifically under laboratory conditions. There are two main methods - the Brinell test and the Janka test.
