Dents and scratches

Description
Scratches and deep dents to the surface of wooden flooring.

Possible causes
Dents, particularly deep dents to wood flooring, are often caused by poorly maintained high heel shoes. If the heel is damaged and the protective piece lost, the exposed metal is left to protrude into the floor. Marks and dents can also be caused by furniture legs in situ, or when furniture is moved across a wood floor.

Remedial tips
Politely request that high heel shoes are removed before your guests walk across a hard wood floor - or at least always ensure that the rubber heel protectors are in place.

Furthermore, always use felt furniture pads or rubber protector cups under heavy furniture legs and never drag or roll heavy casters over the wood flooring.

Deep dents - where the wood fibres themselves are not actually broken - can sometimes be repaired by 'drawing up' the fibers of the wood floor with a damp cloth pressed beneath an electric iron.

Correct maintenance, with a vacuum cleaner and the correct attachment or a soft headed broom, is very important. In addition, clip pet nails regularly, use felt chair and furniture pads, ensure that dirt and grit trap mats at placed at entrances, and use area rugs - especially in front of kitchen sinks.
