Floor squeak

Description
Excessive floor squeak or a noisy floor when it is walked across in a normal manner.

Possible causes
Inadequate nailing or an inadequate sub floor causing movement within the floor.

Remedial tips
Check the sub floor thickness, substance and joist direction to ensure that it is of sound construction. Then add extra face nails, counter sink and fill to hide the nail heads.

Lubrication with graphite, wax, talcum powder or baby powder poured between the joints can help to reduce floor squeaks caused by movement of wood on wood.
