Decking: Get ready for summer

Decking:

Today, garden decking has become one of the most popular patio surfaces in the UK.  When it comes to planning your decking, it goes without saying that it is always best to plan the deck out on paper first – without having so much laid eyes on a timber decking board or joist. What you will need to do however, is decide very carefully where you would like the deck to lay, relative to your home and to other elements of the landscape such as trees. If your garden decking is laid in permanent or near-permanent shade, it could well become affected by dampness – this is likely to cause a risk of algae growth.

Summer is coming and now is the time to be looking at decking. So do you need a way to liven up the colour and protect your hardwood deck from ultraviolet rays without having to apply coat after coat of chemical sealers. If we consider stability, well, this is the natural characteristic of the wood not to warp, check, split or excessively expand and contract within our environment.  Choose a hardwood species that is going to look like its fit for purpose in years to come. As most balcony decks are rather small in the actual size the amount of deck need to cover them is relatively small. In this instance of choosing a wooden species for your balcony we would always recommend using a product that you like to look and feel of and not be cost driven.

For most homeowners, deck care is frustrating, disappointing, and costly. Common problems include frequent maintenance, cupping and warping of boards, and in some cases wood replacement. So truly consistent and satisfactory deck care with enduring beauty, you must start when the deck is being built. Much of the treated lumber used for building decks today arrives at the jobsite containing approximately 60% moisture. This saturated wood dries rapidly leading to warping and cupping and stressing of the fasteners. Once the deck is built it is many times difficult to coat the bottom side of the deck.

When wood is uncoated on the bottom side, it allows moisture to be absorbed, especially if the deck is close to the ground. This moisture will cause expansion and contraction of the boards and in some cases, the moisture must pass through the bottom of the board and out through the top causing problems with the coating or stain on the topside of the board. When the deck is built and saw cuts are made it creates another tremendous source of moisture intrusion. Saw cuts cannot be sealed once the deck is built. So the solution to this common problem is to get your wood a few weeks before the deck is going to be built, stack it with spacers allowing air movement through the stack allowing the wood to dry slowly before the deck is built. Once the wood is dry, a sealer or waterproof or can be applied to the backside and all saw cuts as the deck is being built. Once construction is completed, the topside of the deck can be stained or sealed or finished with the appropriate product.

We supply all the oils and colours and cleaner to keep your decking looking in top top shape. So take a look at our decking products and please feel free to contact us with any queries.

Safer Hardwood Decking with Osmo Anti-slip Deck Oil

The eco-friendly wood and finishes expert Osmo UK, has introduced a new slip resistant finish for wooden decking. The product has been named Osmo Anti-Slip Decking Oil  to emphasize that it does exactly what it says on the tin. It has been designed to not only protect the decking but also to offer a safer decking all year round.

Protection of the surface includes prevention of mould, algae and fungal attack. The Anti-Slip Decking Oil is an oil based finish which provides a durable finish which also provides a safer environment through a reduced risk of slipping. It is a clear, satin finish which has provides a low level of UV protection which helps to protect against and slow down the natural greying process.

“Decking takes a battering all year round from the sun, rain wind and even snow and we want to be able to eliminate the issue of slipping” commented Steve Grimwood, MD of Osmo UK.  “However, we did not want a conventional anti-slip product, unpleasant for consumers to feel, giving a gritty touch to treated surfaces.  Our R&D department devised a special finish, with the required anti-slip properties, which suits our low-solvent content philosophy and, once applied to outdoor decking, is comfortable to walk on.”

Osmo’s new Anti-Slip Decking Oil is based on a blend of renewable vegetable oils together with anti-slip particles. These remain on the surface of the wooden decking and combine with the decking giving it a unique anti-slip grip. Walking  bare foot on the decking is still possible because the surface is not unpleasant to the touch.

Like all Osmo natural oil finishes the decking-oil penetrates deeply into the pores and fibres of the wood, providing a beautiful finish and a long lasting level of protection from within the timber itself. It offers protection against the growth of slimy wood moulds and algae, and consequently helps the decking to provide a natural, non-slip surface.

High quality wooden decking manufactured by Osmo is also available pre-finished with the chosen wood oil and this simply requires a single top coat of Anti-Slip Decking Oil upon installation. For existing wooden decking which already has suffered with green mould growth, then wooden deck should be cleaned with Osmo Gard Clean before applying the exterior wood oil and the anti-slip decking oil top coat. For further details on the Osmo decking oil and pre-finished hardwood decking then please contact the Source Wood Floors sales and technical team on 08456 021781.

Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain

Osmo Wood Stain and protector has been renamed and re-introduced as Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain. Osmo Uk have re-named this highly quality product because they want to highlight the key benefits of the wood stain product, namely it being an eco-friendly ‘natural oil’ wood stain. This clearly defines and differentiates it from the plethora of exterior wood stain products that are available to the discerning punter but which are anything but natural oil based.

Osmo natural oil wood stain is an oil-based protective finish for exterior wood and the name of the product now states exactly what it is and what it does.  The woodstain is a decorative product for all exterior woodwork and it offers a high quality natural oil  finish which allows the wood to breathe and reduces the risk of swelling and shrinkage.  It offers  protection against all weather conditions, prevents mould, algae and fungal decay as well ensuring the wood doesn’t crack, flake, peel or blister.

“We decided to re-brand the product to emphasise that it is a natural oil-based finish,” commented Steve Grimwood, MD at Osmo UK.  “Tradesmen and public alike can often be confused as to whether products are oil- or water- based. The Osmo Woodstain product is clearly a natural oil product.  Its suitable for the commercial and residential environments, the Natural Oil Woodstain will suit everyone who wants their outside spaces and gardens to look appealing, especially during the summer time when they want to enjoy that outdoor lifestyle.”

Natural Oil Woodstain is available in sixteen beautiful colours, ranging from Pine to Mahogany and Walnut to Fir Green.  With such variety, the product is ideal for doors, windows, carports, timber cladding, wooden decking, garden houses and many other forms of exterior timber.

Easy to apply, no need to be thinned,  the wood surface simply needs to be clean, dry and frost-free before application.  Just brush on  two thin and even layers along the wood grain with either an Osmo hand brush or a good quality natural bristle brush.

Natural Oil Woodstain Effect

For those that want that something special then they can add a bit of sparkle to their wood with a silver tint to their wood with with one of the new Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain Effect silver tints.  Boasting the same characteristics of Natural Oil Woodstain, choose from a range of four colours – Agate Silver, Quart Silver, Graphite Silver and Onyx Silver.

A world first – UV Protection Oil Clear

After just a few months, sun, wind, rain and snow can all contribute to wood starting to lose its natural colour – the wood starts to appear as though it were cloaked in a veil of mist and, over time, the original colour disappears completely and the whole surface looks grey. At that point, you can hardly tell what type of wood it is.

The process that causes this deterioration is UV rays from the sun transforming the lignin in the wood into a dark, water-soluble form, which is then washed away by rainfall, leaving just a “skeleton cell”. Even though this process does not initially change the durability or stability of the material, many who use wood in outdoor areas want to maintain its natural appearance.

Through intensive research and development, Osmo has discovered a way of integrating clear UV protection into an oil-based finish. “Up until now, UV protection was only possible if you introduced pigment, i.e. colour, into the product”, explains Product Manager Michael Sommer. “However, that conflicted with customers’ desire to maintain the natural appearance of the wood.” Pigments protect not only the wood, but also the finish itself against UV rays from the sun, which is why many manufacturers focus on thick film coatings (the disadvantage being that they form a peelable film), or they use nano-pigments, which are contained in the finish but are not visible.

However, as Osmo has a philosophy of only using oils and waxes manufactured on a base of natural plant extracts, the manufacturer would only consider using an oil-based finish. “The advantage of oil-based finishes is that they don’t peel, flake or crack and they maintain the natural wood surface,” explains Michael Sommer.

The effect of Osmo UV Protection Oil is produced by the transformation of short-wave UV rays into heat, which is reflected in accordance with the mirror principle. “Developing our UV Protection Oil represents a huge step forwards in the field of clear (colourless) wood protection”, says a convinced Michael Sommer. He continues by saying that UV Protection Oil produces effects that are far superior to other clear wood protection products in the range and that it will soon replace those products. “Those people who have been using our clear Wood Stain and Protector or the Clear Oil will find UV Protection Oil to be a much improved alternative,” says Michael Sommer.

UV Protection Oil Clear can be used as an end coat, for example in combination with Osmo One Coat or with an opaque Osmo Country Colour, which is now available in a multitude of standardised RAL and NCS colour shades. Of course UV Protection Oil can also simply be used on its own, especially if the goal is to maintain the natural wood colour for as long as possible. “With UV Protection Oil, wood can be exposed to sun for 12 times longer than if it were untreated before the greying process begins”, according to Michael Sommer. The coating should be renewed before the oil starts to weather. Michael’s advice is, “if you have gone past the point where it is possible to renovate the wood, you can first treat the wood with Osmo Wood Reviver, which will return it to its original natural condition, before applying UV Protection Oil.

UV Protection Oil is suitable for all exterior wood; Osmo especially recommends it for wood façades, windows and doors, garden furniture, screens and carports. For those who also wish to protect their product against algae and fungal decay, Osmo is also offering a special variety of UV Protection Oil containing biocides. “We want to allow consumers to decide for themselves whether to go for an additive-free, oil-based product or whether to choose UV Protection Oil Extra, which contains preventative protection against algae and fungal decay,” explains Michael Sommer.

New Osmo Anti-Slip decking oil

When the sun is shining there is nothing like a beautiful wooden deck for the garden is high on the list for many people. However, come the winter and many months of wind, rain and the UV light from the sun, the resulting weathered look can be clearly seen. The UV rays will have greyed the wood surface and any moisture sitting on the surface will have created the perfect environment for algae and fungal growth to thrive.

This green surface mould and growth can cause the surface to become slippery. The new Osmo anti-slip decking oil has beend designed to try and aleviate this problem and to help consumers to avoid uncomfortable “slip ups”. This new innovation from Osmo is a clear oil based product which has special particles suspended in the oil which help to reduce the risk of slipping. An added benefit of these particles is that they offer a small amount of UV protection as well preventing the build up of green growth and mould.

All Osmo oil based natural wood finishes are based on renewable vegetable oils and the surface remains open pored and elastic. This allows the wood to breathe and the surface to retain its natural optic. The new Anti-Slip Decking Oil performs the same and after each application the timber appears refreshed. The oils are not a surface preparation surface but penetrate deeply into the pores of wood and provide a durable and long lasting protection.

The Osmo Anti-Slip particles bind with the oil and are attached to the surface of the wood providing a subtle sandpaper like feel to the touch when walking barefoot on the decking. Osmo also provide Anti-Slip decking boards which are pre-finished first with the appropriately matching Wood Oil colour with a single top coat of the Omso Anti-Slip Decking Oil applied after installation.

Use Osmo Anti-Slip Decking Oil with your existing wooden deck to provide a beautiful natural wood finish. Naturally the Anti-Slip Decking Oil can either be used in conjunction with one of Osmo’s Wood Oil colours in the matching natural colour tone of the timber for example combined with Osmo Bangkirai-Oil, or alternatively it can be used as a stand alone finish.
