Underfloor Heating:

The inherent natural warm quality of wood makes it the ideal companion to underfloor heating systems. Both our solid wood floor and engineered wood flooring products work brilliantly with underfloor heating.
Engineered Wood Floors:

One of the top qualities of engineered wood is that it can be precision manufactured to highly tailored specifications, including a heat boosting. During the months you use your underfloor heating, the natural wood layer of engineered wood will contract a little in response to the drier air in the home (due to heating) Our products are engineered to respond positively, minimising the effect of dry air and making our precision products the perfect complement to eco friendly underfloor heating.

Solid Wood Floors
Solid wood with a low moisture content tends to fare best when partnered with underfloor heating. This is due to the innate natural state of the wood already being quite dry, meaning seasonal expanding and contracting is minimised.

We recommend using a maximum thickness of 125mm when laying a wood floor to be used over the top of underfloor heating. Underfloor heating is tipped to be the future of home heating, so we keep our ear to the ground in terms of industry news and product development in both our own sector and that of sustainable housing materials and processes. If you’d like to talk your needs through with one of our engineers, get in touch today on 08456 021781 and we’ll do our best to find the ideal flooring solution for your home or commercial environment.

Wood Floors With Rugs

Hard surfaces (tile, hardwood, laminate) are very popular flooring choices, but sometimes too much wood can leave the room looking bare and cold. A great way to counter this is to use an area rug over your hard surface flooring. Area rugs can add warmth, soften sound and create a focal point for your room. Many older homes feature wood floors throughout. While wood flooring helps to provide charm which wall to wall carpeting certainly lacks, they can leave your home feeling hard and uninviting.

Wall to wall carpeting is the common alternative to wood flooring for individuals who don’t prefer the upkeep and care required for their wood floors. However, carpet after years often needs to be replaced. If you have young children or frequent foot traffic in your home, your carpet will likely experience stains and show its age after time. Rather than carpeting your floors, why not consider rugs and runners?

A rug can help to make your family room feel more comfortable and inviting. Runners help to add style and a softer texture to your hallways. If you have wood flooring that you want to show off but enjoy the benefits of carpeting as well rugs and runners will help to bring warmth and to soften the feel of your wood floors. Rugs and runners help to soften the spaces in your home and provide a sense of warmth. There are such a wide variety of colours and styles available to suit everyone’s taste. Whether your home features oriental decorations, is more traditional or contemporary; a well-placed area rug can be a great anchor for the accessories in the room.

Area rugs fit well in front of a settee, under a coffee table, dining room table and the foot of the bed. You can add a spark to your room with fluffy shag or elegant wool. There are even water-resistant rugs that are designed for outdoor areas such as patios and lanais.

Where to lay your wood floor

It becomes a difficult question with so many types of wood flooring about what flooring to choose and where to lay it. The amount of traffic through the front door, the kids, teenagers and pets all contribute to the wear and tear of any flooring. Investing in wood flooring does come with much practicality, keeping it clean is easier and certainly the wear and tear is minimalistic unlike carpet’s that show every grain of dirt. If the floor is in the hallway, where people come in from outside, then laminate flooring is the best bet, because it is the most resistant to damage. Laminate flooring is basically a photo of a wood panel under a thick laminate sheet.

If the floor is in the living room, or any other room that will be shown off, then engineered is the best bet because it is the closer of the two to a real wood floor. Engineered wood floors provide all the beauty and charm of a solid wood floor with excellent dimensional stability and versatility. Many consumers choose engineered wood floors over solid wood floors because it is very versatile when it comes to installation. Not only is it suitable to stick down using an elastic adhesive, you can also float the floor down onto a wood flooring underlay, and engineered wood floors are ideal to use in conjunction with under floor heating.

For much the same reason as above, laminate flooring is the best option for many people with young children. Not only is it resistant to damage, but it is also easy to clean should they have an accident with a crayons. The highest quality of laminate wood flooring offers the look of a real wood floor, but a floor that is much easier to install, and which is considerably cheaper. Another great advantage of laminate wood flooring is that it is very durable, and extremely easy to clean & maintain. Laminate flooring gets it’s very convincing look from a high resolution picture of real wood which is protected under a very durable layer of hard resin, which can be textured to further replicate the feel and look of a heavily grained real wood floor.

Or of course if you need something a little more water resistant then there is the Aqua-Step waterproof flooring which is a new generation of laminate flooring – Water and laminate is no issue anymore! It’s the, the first 100% water resistant laminate floor. Aqua-Step, with its unique qualities, can be used for residential where traditional laminate cannot. If you have underfloor heating, dampness or extreme climate change then engineered flooring is capable of expansion and contraction when it is necessary.

In fact it is the only wood flooring product with this capability. As we know that changes in temperature cause materials to expand and contract, as doe’s dampness, then in these circumstances engineered flooring is the only practical choice within or without those circumstances it is a matter of choice, you may want to have engineered flooring in the hall, even if you do have kids. However, when it comes to having engineered flooring, if the floor is likely to expand or contract, then it is our express recommendation.

Wooden Flooring for Conservatories

Your choice of conservatory flooring will play a major role in the overall appearance of your conservatory interior and it is important to find a suitable floor that will suit your needs in terms of desired appearance and your budget. It is also important that your conservatory flooring materials are suited to the type of space that you are trying to create.

Wooden flooring for conservatories and your home can provide you with the perfect flooring to suit your individual needs and requirements. It’s living, breathing natural wood material that will last a lifetime. Little wonder it’s become the most popular natural floor covering-nothing else can compare. Unlike thin plastic laminates, wooded flooring is warm and extremely durable, and with just a little basic care, will last for decades. You’ll get the very best in hardwood wooded flooring – 100% genuine timber. Conservatory wooden flooring can provide you with the perfect flooring to suit your individual needs and requirements. There are a number of different types of wood conservatory flooring that have various degrees of suitability for use in a conservatory. Until recently hardwood floors were not recommended for use in a conservatory, especially if there was a wet area which could make the planks shrinkage, warp or split. Using natural hardwood flooring in a south-facing conservatory was also not recommended due to the excessive heat and danger from shrinking, warping and splitting.

However Engineered Hardwood can withstand heat and moisture with minimal movement. Unlike laminate, engineered hardwood has a real wood surface which sits on top of several layers of other wood, such as plywood, high density fibreboard or just another hardwood. This “sandwich” gives great strength to the flooring and helps minimise warping and allow various types of real wood surfaces to be used in the extreme environments of a kitchen or conservatory.

Parquet flooring is small thick pieces of wood used to make traditional parquet flooring, were less prone to warping and splitting than planks of wood when used in a conservatory. Thinner modern parquet flooring may be less suitable and it is best to seek advice before specifying parquet flooring for your conservatory.

Bamboo flooring, if sourced from a responsible manufacturer, is an environmentally friendly and hardwearing choice of materials for a conservatory floor. As bamboo grows to maturity in around 5 years, it alleviates some of the issues associated with destruction of hardwood forests which are being destroyed at an alarming rate and are extremely slow to recover – the harvesting of bamboo does not preclude the plant itself from continuing to grow either.

With greater directional stability than the majority of hardwoods it eliminates the warping and distortion issues associated with solid wood floors and laminate flooring. Tough and durable, its installation is similar to that of solid wood flooring. If you are looking for a beautiful, tough and eco-friendly floor for your conservatory, bamboo may be the answer. It is available in a number of different colours and shades although interestingly these are not stains or dyes for the most part – they are normally determined by the amount and duration of heat and pressure applied during manufacturing. Bamboo contains natural sugars, which when exposed to heat and pressure begins to carbonise and as they do so, the appearance of the material darkens. This is a natural colouration and can be sanded without degradation.
A flooring solution that is beautiful, natural and enduring – for today, tomorrow and a lifetime.

About wood flooring underlay
After you have decided on the perfect type of flooring for your home, it’s time to look at some flooring accessories. Selecting the right flooring accessories can mean a lot of difference in the long-term maintenance of your flooring. Whether you are installing hardwood floors, or laminates, you will need to use an underlay to apply your flooring to the subfloor, some of these underlays are damp proof or sound proof to suit specific requirements. After choosing your underlay, you will have to prepare your subfloor with flooring accessories like membranes or leveling components. Next, look for matching profiles to hide away unsightly edges or pipe holes. For laminate and hardwood profiles, there are skirting’s, scotias, radiator pipe covers, and stair nose moldings. Wood flooring underlay is seen more of a necessity than an ‘optional’ purchase these days. Not only does it provide significant sound dampening qualities on hardwood floors but also helps to insulate the surrounding area. In addition, the physical barrier created by the underlay provides comprehensive protection from dampness rising from your subfloor to your wood floor.

So, now you know the benefits of flooring underlay, how do you install it?
When installing your new wood floor, the underlay can determine the success and durability of your new product’s life span. There are different types of wood flooring underlay for different types of installation, sound, heat or moisture insulation quality. There are also different types of underlay for the different type of flooring being installed. Wood flooring underlay can now be used when installing every type of flooring. It’s most common use will be when installed in conjunction with an engineered wood floor. This allows the floor to be floated down onto the underlay. The same installation method can be used when installing solid engineered wood floors. Solid wood floors can now be installed with adhesive underlays, specifically designed to be used with solid wood floor boards. There is also a good selection of underlays which are designed to be used with under floor heating, which allow the heat to pass through quickly and evenly distributed. Moisture barriers are also a very common feature in wood floor underlays. Allowing moisture to get into your floor boards can completely wreck the entire floor. When you are laying laminate flooring in a kitchen, you should really think about choosing the higher end flooring because of the protection offered. A kitchen area is known to have mould issues near the sink, dishwasher, and refrigerator because of the moisture that comes with these appliances. It is better to lay the protected flooring so you don’t find yourself having to repair or replace the flooring from moisture issues.
