Wooden Flooring May Benefit Your Home

Revamp you Home: 2011/12

If you are looking to revamp your home, it could be time for you to consider changing your flooring. After all, these areas are a large part of your residence and are one of its defining features. A great way to give your property a makeover is to rip up old and worn out carpets and fit wooden flooring. This can freshen up the appearance of any room, making it seem cleaner and more spacious.

And it is not just the aesthetics that make wood flooring a good option for home renovations. They also have a practical value. Unlike carpets, they are resistant to spillages, meaning you never need panic again when your child knocks over his dinner or an overzealous party guest begins gesticulating wildly with a full glass of red wine.

All you have to do is reach for the mop and your room will be as good as new. Of course, as well as ordering and fitting wooden flooring, you may also want to consider changing other elements of your house or flat. Perhaps the wallpaper needs to be replaced, or it might be time to finally change the kitchen units you have despised for so long.

By tweaking your property in ways like this, you can make it feel like new. And with great prices available on engineered wood flooring and other such products, you needn’t break the bank in order to get the look you desire. So what are you waiting for? Check out your options and before you know it, you could have the abode of your dreams.

WORKTOPS: The Kitchen

Hardwearing wooden worktops

Worktops from wood are durable, classic in their look and will instantly become the focal point in any kitchen. Each wood species has a slightly different shade and markings. The beauty of the solid wood worktops lies in their warm tones and natural beauty. Wood worktops are great for providing a feeling of warmth and are easy to maintain and will suit both traditional and modern style kitchens. Wood worktops are also great for matching with a wide choice of colour schemes and will help to add character in your kitchen.

When choosing solid wood worktops instead of other worktop types, you benefit from the ability to maintain and enhance its fantastic natural rich and warm look, whilst other work surfaces age badly through the years. The right style of kitchen worktop will make all the difference in your new kitchen and really help to enhance the overall look. Kitchen worktops have to be hardwearing and durable as they need to be able to withstand hot pans, sharp objects and spills on an everyday basis, so it pays to choose the right style of worktop to suit your requirements. If you have a contemporary kitchen or something more traditional there will be a worktop to perfectly suit your kitchen. Made from a completely natural product, wooden worktops are a great way to give your kitchen a stylish and natural look.  You can install wooden worktops to create a traditional or a modern look depending on the overall theme you have chosen and, with the right care your wooden worktops will last a lifetime.

In order to keep your wooden worktop in great condition, you should oil the wood before installation to help avoid bowing or warping.  Oiling is a great way to create a water resistant finish on your worktop and will make the wood more hard wearing and long-lasting.  Oiling, unlike varnishing or lacquering, adds an unsurpassed depth and character to the wood.  A simple and easy process, it will protect your wood when it’s new and rejuvenate your wood if it reaches the point where it’s looking a bit tired. You only need to oil them two to four times a year, depending on the use they get. Drainer grooves, cut ends and heavily used areas may need a bit of extra attention and, if you get careless, you may need to do a bit of sanding and re-oiling.

The fact that it’s relatively easy to renovate and even repair timber worktops means, though, that you could keep them looking good for many years to come. A good test of whether or not your worktop needs re-oiling, is the “bead test”.  Effectively if your wooden worktop is sufficiently oiled, any liquid spills should create “beads” on the surface. If this isn’t happening, then it’s probably time to re-oil. If your worktop becomes extremely tired looking, it may be time to think of sanding it down and re-applying multiple coats of oil as if the worktop was new.

You should also bear in mind that heat and sharp objects are not great friends of wood either, so do make sure you have and make use of a good heat diffusing pot stand and chopping board to avoid unnecessary burning or cutting of the worktop.
