Choosing wooden flooring for your home is one of the greatest investments you’ll ever make. Unfortunately, this kind of floors needs to be regularly maintained with refinishing to preserve their beauty. In order to prevent the effect of wear and tear from taking away the elegance of your floor, you need to use the right type of product for refinishing. Here’s a list of the best oils that you can choose from.
  • 1.    Wax
Wax is the original and time-tested product used for refinishing. It is available in paste or liquid form. It has a low amount of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). It has a subtle and low lustre. It is easily applied by hand which is recommended for those who are strict on their budget and want to do the refinishing by themselves. Wax tends to darken the color of the wood. To prevent this, use a sanding sealer or shellac as a primary coat. Apply two to three coats of the wax to give your floor the perfect shine.
  • 2.    Oil-modified urethane
This has been one of the commonly used oils by those who refinish floors by profession. It is easy to apply, long-lasting and less costly as compared to the water-based urethane. However it has high VOC content, which causes its strong odour upon usage. This usually takes 8 to 10 hours to dry, so it is best to go out of the house with your pets while refinishing is ongoing.
  • 3.    Penetrating sealers

This product can penetrate the wood, which improves the look of the grain pattern and color of the wood. The finish is long lasting and usually done every 2 to 3 years. Its main component Tung oil is a natural compound with low VOC. Drying time is long, which takes 1 to 2 days in between coats.
  • 4.    Moisture-cured urethane
Moisture-cured urethane is better than oil and water based urethane in terms of durability. However, it is hard to apply and needs technique to get the refinishing right so it is best to leave it to the professionals. It has high VOC, so the house needs to be vacated during refinishing.
