Osmo Thermo-Wood Plankwood Flooring

Posted in Wood Flooring News by Source on June 24th 2010

Recent trends in interior design have led to an increase in enquiries for very dark wood flooring. However finding a natural dark tropical wood species, for example Brazilian Cherry, Mahogany or Merbau, has ethical implications. Sourcing a renewable source of timber that complies to the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is not easy because sourcing tropical timbers threatens natural habitats and rare species. Osmo’s Thermo-Wood plankwood flooring offers a stunning alternative utilising common, domestic timbers such as Oak which are harvested according to the principles of sustainable forestry.

Thermo-Wood plankwood flooring is an environmentally friendly alternative to rare, tropical dark wood timber. The thermo treatment is an innovative process that involves heat treating the domestic timbers to 200 degrees centigrade. This process naturally darkens the wood without using ammonia or toxic chemicals or surface stains or dyes. The Osmo Plankwood flooring is a very high quality class of wooden floorboard produced with a 3-ply structure for greater dimensional stability. The extensive range of plankwood flooring includes four extremely attractive Thermo-Wood options.

The Thermo-Wood treated flooring retains its original structure but with a much reduced moisture content. This gives a secondary benefit in that its natural tendancy to expand or to shrink and swell is reduced by halve. This is particularly useful when the wooden flooring is to be used in conjunction with energy efficient warm water under-floor heating systems. “Wood is the ideal material for use within both commercial and residential environments." says Steve Grimwood, Managing Director of Osmo UK. "Through relentless research, development and innovation, Osmo has succeeded in putting together a truly revolutionary brand of products that aim to be as environmentally safe and friendly as possible. Thermo-Wood flooring is warm in colour, but because it is ideal for homes with underfloor heating it can warm in even the coldest winter.”

Osmo UK take the issue of deforestation very seriously and only supply a wide range of high quality solid and engineered wood flooring where it can be sure the raw timber is harvested with the use efficient forestry management to ensure that the lumber is from sustainable resources.

Every home is different and Osmo wooden flooring is available in a range of widths, wood species, finishes and styles. Osmo wooden floors are all available pre-treated with Osmo Polyx Oil. This is a natural hardwax oil that provides a beautiful, natural and durable finish that won't hide the wood beneath a surface preparation such as a lacquer or varnish. The oil is virtually solvent free and made from organic, natural ingredients such as linseed oil, candelilla wax and thistle oil. Osmo UK supply a wide range of interior and exterior clear and colour finishes as well as high quality wood products and a range of specialist finishes.

Osmo operates a policy of only supplying products which are both safe and environmentally friendly.  This has resulted in the successful certification according to DIN EN ISO 9001 (quality management) and DIN EN ISO 14001 (environmental management) by the TÜV (Technical Control Board) Rhineland.
