What Is a Starter Board Within a Fixed Length Product?
A starter board in a fixed length wood flooring product is a shorter board used to begin a row during installation. It is typically created by cutting a full-length board within the pack.
Why Starter Boards Are Used
Even with fixed length flooring—where all boards are manufactured to the same size—installers still need to create a staggered joint pattern. This avoids visible repetition and improves the structural stability of the floor.
To achieve this:
- The first row is often cut to fit the room
- The offcut from that row is then used to start the next row
- This offcut becomes the starter board
This process continues across the installation, creating a natural and evenly staggered appearance.
Are Starter Boards Included in Packs?
More often than not, you will find a cut board within a pack. This can be considered a starter board supplied by the manufacturer, and it serves a practical purpose:
- Reduces installation waste
- Helps with laying out the floor efficiently
- Makes use of otherwise unused sections of timber
