Hardwood flooring is an extremely durable and relatively cheap material that can be refinished year after year. Turn to Source Wood Floors if you are looking for high quality wooden flooring, including an excellent range of hardwood flooring
. If you have ever wondered how hardwood flooring
is made, you can find the method behind the creation of this elegant flooring below.
The Creation of Hardwood Flooring
Solid wood flooring is made from planks that are taken from a single piece of wood. These planks can be delivered pre-finished or unfinished. Once the tree is cut, its quality is assessed and then a decision is made on how they are going to be used. Only trees with tight grains and few knots are chosen for flooring. The chosen logs of wood are cut into planks. The three most popular cutting methods are: 1) quarter sawn, where planks are cut into quarters before strips of wood are cut out to make the hardwood flooring; 2) rift sawn, where logs are cut at different angles (this is a more stable method, and provides higher quality flooring, but is also more expensive); 3) Flat or plain sawn, the cut that’s most commonly used, and provides a greater range of variations than the other two cutting techniques. After all boards are planned, a machine cuts tongues and grooves in the boards so they can interlock tightly. The purpose of tongues and grooves is to allow the boards to expand without creating gaps (after the installation). Some boards might go through a stressing process, which will give the wood an older and more antique look. Then the final product is shipped to the marketplace. It can be either be finished with a few coats of protective finish, or can be shipped unfinished. If you plan on a DIY installation, it is a good idea to choose pre-finished floors.
